Robert is securely atttested, and his ancestry is described in a Birth Brief recently (2013) unearthed by Anders Klarbring in Swedish archives. Utdrag ur Värmlands regementes (Närke och Värmlands) historia utarb af Nordenswan 1904. "nr 167 ROBERT MOFFAT gift med ELISABETH RUTENSKÖLD. Fänrik i Leipzig 1642 där han var äfven följ.år (1644 års mönsterrulla säger:"Värfvd fänrik aug 1643" kaptenlöjtnant juli 1654-57. Chef för W. Månpennas kompani dec 1657 (mönsterrullan för nov 1658 säger att R.M. behåller detta kompani så framt ej Månpenna sig inställer). Erhöll kungl. bref 18 nov 1665 att njuta samma rättigheter som svensk adelsman. Men han skulle till nästa riksdag skaffa bevis på att han var af adlig skotts familj. Detta fullföljdes dock ej. Han lägrade nämligen under sin komendering i Varberg 1666 en gift kvinna vid namn Carin Helgesdotter, som med gift avdagatog sin man. M. ställdes inför Krigsrätt, som dömde honom till döden 5 nov 1666. Hans hustru ingick med nådeansökan för honom, emedan hon, om domen gick i verkställighet, skulle blifva ensam att försörja 9 omyndiga barn. I denna nådeansökan säger hon att hennes man tjänat 30 år. Han erhöll nåd, men måste af denna orsak afgå från reg:tet han lefvde 1669. Bodde på Väsby, By socken, Värmland. Robert sought a Birth Brief, showing his noble birth, and this was granted (see below), and a copy of this Brief has just now (2013) been found. Text has been revised to modern English syntax and spelling: Concerning a petition presented by Captain Robert Moffat, showing that the petitioner has these many years served as a soldier under the crown of Sweden and has by God's providence purchased good esteem and fortune in that place, is now married and has settled himself and his family in that kingdom. The petitioner, being descended of Scottish parents, has procured a testimonial of his descent and pedigree, witnessed as the same person by the Earls of Morton [James Douglas], Dunfermline [Charles Seton or Alexander Seton], Caithness [James Sinclair] and certain other noblemen and gentlemen of honour and credit, dated the 9th, 10th and 13th of August [1672?]. Because the petitioner has need of a birth brief generated under His Majesty's great seal that conforms to the said certificate, he humbly requests that the Privy Council will order such a certificate be granted to that effect. The Lords of His Majesty's Privy Council, having heard and considered the above petition and certificate, do so order the director of the chancellery to extend a birth brief in the supplicant's favour to conform to the aforementioned certificate and to the Lord Chancellor to append the great seal to it.
