Robert Maxwell, 4th Lord Maxwell was born circa 1493.2 He was the son of John Maxwell, 3rd Lord Maxwell and Agnes Stewart.3 He married, firstly, Janet Douglas, daughter of Sir William Douglas, 6th of Drumlanrig and Elizabeth Gordon, after 4 July 1509.4 He married, secondly, Agnes Stewart, daughter of James Stewart, 1st Earl of Buchan and Margaret Murray, between 1520 and 15 November 1525.5 He died on 9 July 1546.5
He was appointed Knight before 1510.3 He held the office of Warden of the Western Marches.3 He succeeded as the 4th Lord Maxwell [S., 1445] on 9 September 1513.1 He was Hereditary Sheriff of Kirkcudbright before 1515.3 He held the office of First Gentelman of the Bedchamber.3 He was Captain of the Guard before 1524.3 He held the office of Provost of Edinburgh before 1524.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in 1526.3 He held the office of Chief Carver to King James V in 1528.3 He held the office of Extraordinary Lord of Session in 1533.3 He held the office of a Lord of Regency in 1537.3 He fought in the Battle of Solway Moss on 24 November 1542, where he was taken prisoner by the English.3 | |
