John, the son of Morris Chenault & Mary Polly Murphey, first married Mahala G. Duboise, 5 Aug 1849. They were the parents of five children. After death of Mahala he married Martha W. Leigh, on 17 Mar 1867, and to this union eight children were born.
John served the Confederacy in Capt. P. N. G. Rand's company E, 11th Alabama Cavalry, Jeff Forrest's Brigade, Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest's Cavalry. He participated in the battles of Chickamauga, Murphreesboro, Rome, and others. Even though he was never wounded, eleven bullets passed through his clothing during these engagements.
