Samuel R. Elander, Sr. 1935-2010 SOUTHWICK - Samuel R. Elander, Sr., 75, died unexpectedly on November 16, 2010 at home. He was born in Westfield to the late Otto and Mary (Goddard) Elander and was a graduate of Westfield High School. Sam was employed as a meat cutter for Cantell's Market for many years; he was a guard at the Somers State Maximum Security Prison for 12 years and was a rural mail carrier in East Granby, CT for over 20 years. He was a diehard Yankees fan as well as a Patriots fan, and enjoyed taking walks around town. Sam was a generous and loving family man; he also loved playing racko and cribbage with his grandchildren. Sam served his country with the United States Army from 1957-1959 and was honorably discharged as a Specialist 4th class. He is survived by his loving sons, Samuel R. Elander, Jr. and his wife, Sherry (Lennon) of Westfield and Jeff Elander of West Springfield, his sisters, Mary Ellen Hinckley and Doris Elander of Westfield, his five cherished grandchildren, Samantha, Sarah, Stacey, Jessica and Joshua, his former spouse, Mary D. (French) Elander of Indian Orchard and his beloved cats, Frankie and Alice. He was predeceased by his brother, Francis Elander and a sister, Christine Gardock. | |
