Evan Dean Alstrom of Burien , WA 77 years, 8 months and 13 days, died on October 10, 2012 at Burien Medical Center following a short illness.
Dean was born on January 27, 1935 to Evan & Josephine (Tague) Alstom in Ontario, Oregon when his family was living on a Ranch in Vail, OR.. His family moved to Pasco, Wa., in 1942. He attended local schools, graduating from Pasco H.S. in 1953.
He attended Washington State College in Pullman, WA., for 2 years and then moved to Seattle, WA.
Dean worked in a number of industrial sites in Seattle as he gained the experience and the skills in business he would use in later years. In what would be a successful career in the Electroplating business.
After arriving in Seattle Dean had the good fortune to meet an attractive young lady, Carmen Brando, who worked at the telephone company. Dean & Carmen were joined in marriage on April 25th 1959. This led to a businessteam … Dean running the business side and Carmen keeping the books for the business. This team stood the test of time and they celebrated their 53rd
anniversary in April. In 1962 Dean purchased into a partnership in Silicone Glazing in,Georgetown Washington. In 1974 Dean owned and operated for two years, Slade Machine shop. He purchased Art Brass and Plating Works in 1977; he incorporated the business in 1979 and continued to run Art Brass Inc. until his retirement in December of 2000.
Dean was a member of the “American Electroplating Society” and the “National Association of Metal Finishers” Dean also had close ties over the years with other Electroplating business in the Northwest as well. We all know of Dean’s love of automobiles and especially Ford Thunderbirds. In 1970 Dean was one of the original members of the Olympic Classic Thunderbird Club. He held many offices including president. He remained an active member until his death. Dean completely restored 3 Thunderbirds 1955, 1956, and 1957. The 1957 T-Bird was his first, Carmen bought the “bought the piece of junk" for a Christmas present in the late 60’s for $987.00. They kept that one until 2010 when they sold it to one of the club members. It is parked outside the funeral home today. The Mercedes Gull Wing you see parked there also is the last car Dean bought. He enjoyed going to car shows over the years with his different vehicles.
He won many awards, but the ones he was most proud of and meant the most to him were the “People’s Choice Awards” he accrued. Mostly because they were the ones that were voted on by the people who came to see the cars. Dean was also an Amateur Ham Operator. He spent countless hours visiting with other Hams all over the world. He back in the olden days before Satellite phones helping to patch phone calls for Coast Guardsmen and Navy personnel to their loved ones back in USA. He also was in charge of the Land Line Calls for the Seattle to Maui Sail Boat Races back in the 1970’s He is survived by his wife, Carmen, 1 sister Sharlene Johnson and her husband Ron, of Walla Walla, Washington. 6 Nieces, 2 Nephews, Numerous Great Nieces and Nephews countless close friends, former employees and friendly competitors.
